Actually, as explained to me many years ago, "filk" was a tongue-slipped contraction of "filthy folk". While there are beautiful ballads being written, there are also lots of very popular bawdy songs. The term stuck.

Actually, "filk" was a misprint on a con program many years ago. It became an in joke, and entered into fannish language. re: the loud attendees, that's a coomon problem in con suites. I was at WorldCon in Anaheim in 96, and there was a guy holding forth in the ConSuite that we dubbed "The Pontificator", as he appeared to be in love with the sound of hi own voice.

OK
OK brad, you are kind of mistaken as to what filk is. "filking" is taking an well known song and re-writing the lyrics to it. wierd al yankovic is a filker. it is a midieval tradition dating back to the bards and troubadors of the late thirteenth century when one minstrel would often "steal" a popular tune and put his own words to it.

I heard that the word "filk" was the result of a typo that people continued to use facetiously.

Sorry, Patrick the Butcher, you are incorrect. Wikipedia actually has a good history of filking and the origins of the term at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filk#History . I actually know some of the various people involved in those early days of filking, and they all tell the same story. Filking includes song parodies, yes, but also original music.

I'm just ecstatic to see the word "filk" register in a search engine! I've been fannish since the early 80s and I’m 37 now. I remember being one of the first people in my social circle on the Internet - we're talking 2 other people and no graphics. In 1995 with my Packard Bell Legend (yeah one of the few that did work and Tom Smith did filk about PBs) I launched onto the net again and found very little in the way of fandom. We of the fannish persuasion are darn proud to have online and offline communities such as this. Will it help people at work understand what the heck I’m listening to when I accidentally yank my earphones out of my Dell’s soundjack? Probably not. We who are aspiring dirty old filkers need to do everything that we can to preserve these phenomena. With the recent passing of Cynthia McQuillin in early 2006 I realized the physical mortality of a legend that I cut my eardrums on. Do I want to see filk spread like a plague to the pinks….maybe not quite that drastic. But I do like that it is mutating as needed and peering up from the underground to hover in the atmosphere where all can experience it. Fandom brings some normality to the abnormals also I registered to vote at a con – I found my short duration personal savior at a con. Hey kids, if you like using search engines type Praise BOB! into one and see what comes out!

Ok so aside from the definition of "filking"....tell me where I can find songs that have been re-written as sci-fi ballads?
