Kevin Roche: Blue Alien Reptile

Kevin Roche is maybe the only person I’ve ever seen who doesn’t look weird wearing a Bluetooth headset. Granted, I initially assumed his rhinestone-studded earpiece was part of the futuristic, spidery costume I saw him wearing at the WorldCon. Plus, he’d just given a talk on spintronics, a technology he’s helped innovate to increase the speed of hard drives (Kevin’s an IBM research scientist and gets the futuristic benefit of the doubt where I’m concerned).

Kevin is an avid member of SF Fandom and the greater costuming community. After seeing him in the WorldCon’s masquerade I understand why. His blue-sequined alien reptile costume was a Con stand-out. Kevin’s the Chair of next year’s Costume-Con 26.

DISPATCH (4.2.07) FROM KEVIN from St. Louise, site of this year’s (just finished) Costume-Con: “If you'd like a good reference for some of the really creative talent in fan costuming, take a look at the archives at Costume-Con. I had a hand in helping to upgrade the galleries, which feature a visual archive of the last 24 years of Costume-Con. You'll find pieces by both Bridget Landry and me in there!” (Thanks, KR)

Find out about other upcoming fandom and costuming-related events at Underground’s Upcoming site. We’ve listed a bunch of cons there.

For even more fandom-related events, check out SARudy’s AWESOME list. And enjoy SARudy’s super cool alien make-up while you’re at it.

I suppose I should have given you a pointer to our spintronics website at http://www.almaden.ibm.com/spinaps , too, since you kindly mention both my Day Job and my costume work. I've just rolled out a new version of that site and am beginning to post updates from my colleagues about their research projects. If you'd like to see some photos of the Big Toys we've built for making our nanoscale spin-engineered materials, check out http://www.almaden.ibm.com/spinaps/research/tools

Of course, my profile just lists the events I'd be attending (I'm NYC to Brad's LA), but there is the Fandom Conventions Group ( http://upcoming.org/group/2055/ ) that show's cons all over the place.
